DFA Cambridge is a grassroots civic group. We are taking back our country from the ground up - by supporting local progressive candidates, acting locally on policy issues, and welcoming new faces into Cambridge politics. DFA Cambridge was first started as the first Howard Dean meetup group in Massachusetts, in February 2003. In March 2004, following a year's worth of efforts for the Howard Dean campaign, DFA Cambridge became a coalition group of Democracy for America, the nationwide grassroots group started in the wake of the Dean campaign. Since that time, DFA Cambridge has worked tirelessly on behalf of local candidates. Most recently, we helped State Rep. Pat Jehlen become the new state senator from the Second Middlesex district. We are now working to elect four progressive candidates to Cambridge City Council. See our candidates page for more information. DFA Cambridge is also actively involved with important policy issues. In April 2005, we met with US Rep. Michael Capuano to share our views on Social Security. More recently, we have organized efforts to call our state representatives and Sen. Travaligni regarding the anti-freedom to marry state constitutional amendment. Our efforts to bring new faces into Cambridge politics include both community-building and education. Together with Cambridge Drinking Liberally, we provide weekly drinking nights for those who want to talk about politics with fellow liberals. We also work to educate voters on city politics - in August 2005, we sponsored a well-attended forum on the city council race with the Progressive Democrats of Cambridge. We meet once a month to discuss our efforts in the upcoming month. Meetings are free and open to the public, and all are invited to attend. Starting in September 2006, our regular general meeting date will be the second Thursday of each month: September 14, October 12 and November 9. Our steering committee is listed below:
